The Back Beach is the western end of Tahunanui - the spit, the Blind Channel embayment behind it, and the foreshore beach running along to (but not into) the main beach - accessed near Back Beach Road. It is the only part of Tahunanui where dogs are allowed, up to about a kilometre of beach at low tide. Dogs are PROHIBITED on the main Tahunanui Beach (eastern two-thirds), playgrounds, sports fields and buildings. The Blind Channel estuary is a sensitive wildlife habitat: keep your dog away from the estuary margins and protected birds, especially during the summer nesting season.
