Dog rules by council: region-by-region summary
Dog rules in New Zealand are set by each city or district council in its own dog control bylaw — there is no national default for beaches and parks. The table below lists every territorial authority. Districts marked Verified have had their zones checked against the council's own GIS data or bylaw schedules in DogZone (66 of 66 districts at last refresh). For unverified districts, DogZone deliberately shows nothing rather than guessing.
Always confirm against the council's published bylaw and on-site signage — bylaws are amended, and signs at the location take precedence.
